Is it a groundhog, a horse or a deer prancing through Detroit’s Palmer Park? It may be all three, but more likely it is a dog, dressed up as a superhero, bunny or in another unexpected disguise for Detroit’s Third Annual Palmer Park WinterFest and Doggie Fashion Parade.
- Leashes and personal dog training from Razork9.com, Ray Kerimian (trainer, one of our judges and co-founder of the Doggie Fashion Parade)
- Gift basket from Pet-n-Paw in Ferndale
- Gift certificate from K9 Specialties in Warren
- Custom dog basket from Puppycarina
- 37 Gift certificates from Napier’s Kennel Shop in Birmingham (including a $50 gift certificate!)
Pre-registeration for dogs and guidelines for safety and behavior can be found online at: peopleforpalmerpark.org/calendar/winterfest-doggie-fashion-parade
MUSIC: There will be a Walker-Miller Energy warm up tent with music provided by Lac La Belle (Nick Schillace and Jennie Knaggs, www.laclabellemusic.com), an acoustic duo that juxtaposes the early decades of recorded rural American music with decaying Rustbelt aesthetic. A tradition is re-imagined — or maybe just resumed — in the ‘future-rustic’ swirl of accordion, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, and resonator guitar.
At the 2013 WinterFest, REI brought snowshoes for attendees to try out, which were great fun. Of course, the Doggie Fashion Parade was one of the highlights of the afternoon. Dog Judges Liz Blondy from Canine to Five dogcare, dog trainer Ray Kerimian from Razork9, and Michigan Senator Virgil Smith, awarded prizes to all the contestants. Canine to Five donated free daycare coupons to all dogs; Kerimian donated an hour of free training; Mike Palmer, owner of Premier Pet Supply in Beverly Hills, donated gift cards, discounts and dog treats and toys and other prizes; and Alyssa Stybel from Aly Doodles donated hand-drawn doggie notecards. Prizes were awarded for creative costumes, good behavior and best fur coats. Dog owners had a ball creating their dogs’ fashion attire for a run on the Palmer Park ‘Red Carpet’ that encircles Lake Francis.

WinterFest 2013 Music, Sponsors & Volunteers: Jannina Barefield-Norpoth, violinist with Hollands, grew up feeding the ducks and playing at Palmer Park. She was thrilled to perform in the warm-up tent with her husband John-Paul. Hollands is a Detroit-connected, Brooklyn-based electronic folk-orchestral rock duo with on John-Paul Norpoth on vocals and guitar, and Jannina on electric violin. Click here to listen to their music. Jannina has also performed with countless acts such as Jay-Z, Beyonce, Shelia E., and My Brightest Diamond; as well as jazz with her dad, A. Spencer Barefield and Regina Carter; and classical artists, such as Izhak Perlman, Sphinx Virtuosis, and her string ensemble PubliQuartet. The Norpoths have recorded strings for Akron/Family, Darryl Hall, John Legend and others. Our sponsors for WinterFest 2013 included: City of Detroit, Palmer Park Apartments, Shelbourne Development/Malino Construction, Detroit Golf Club, and Senator Virgil Smith. We also thank the dozens of volunteers who braved the cold to help, including a team of volunteers from Quicken Loans.
